Work

As well as seven years as the editor of cult British style and culture title Dazed & Confused, I have contributed to many publications over the years, including The Times (of London), i-D, The Gourmand, Beauty Papers and AnOther Magazine. In 2016, I founded Good Trouble, an award-winning publication about the intersection of arts and culture with protest and activism. In 2023, I started the episodic AI-voiced audio art project Offal, which will also be published as a journal in 2024. A selection of published work:

  • Interviews with Scarlett Johansson, Laurie Anderson, Sam Rockwell, Steve Reich, Gregory Crewdson

  • Traveling to Baltimore to report on the pioneering work of youth organization OrchKids

  • Visiting personal archive of 60s and 70s counterculture photography The Family Acid

  • Essay about the history and future of glamour and technology

  • Visiting New York’s cult food spots with some of the city’s musicians

Dazed & Confused (2005–12)

I became the editor of influential British fashion & culture magazine Dazed & Confused in 2005. There, I collaborated with the likes of Daft Punk, Bjork, Grimes, the White Stripes, Jake & Dinos Chapman, and Vivienne Westwood for cover features and special issues, as well as interviewing many other characters both well-known and obscure from the worlds of music, fashion, film, art and activism. A selection of covers from the period is below.

Good Trouble (2016–21)

In November 2016, I launched Good Trouble as a digital publication about the intersection of arts and culture with protest and activism. In summer 2017, I edited and published its first print issue, a broadsheet newspaper designed by Richard Turley, which was awarded a D&AD Pencil.

In summer 2018, its second issue was stocked in galleries, museums and independent bookstores across the UK, Europe and North America, and won Magazine of the Year at the 2018 Stack Awards.

The third issue emerged just before lockdown in March 2020. Good Trouble closed in early 2021.

This is a magazine for its time; a heady mix of rabble-rousing politics and humour that applies the spontaneous excitement of a punk zine to an absurd broadsheet newspaper format.” – Jeremy Leslie, MagCulture

Books

I was asked to write the foreword to Spiralled by Seana Gavin (IDEA Books), a visual diary of her time travelling Europe in the 90s with Spiral Tribe and other nomadic techno sound systems. “The photographs (and the texts by Seana and Roderick Stanley) convey a real sense of freedom,” said Idea. More: ArtReview, AnOther, i-D

I’ve edited a number of books, including Dapper Dan’s Harlem (Gucci / IDEA Books), D&AD50 (TASCHEN), Louis Vuitton New York City Guide (Éditions Louis Vuitton), Destroy (Gestalten), and Miles of MAC (Rizzoli).

Film

My self-produced short documentary about the underground music scene in Johannesburg, Joburg Party (co-directed with South African photographer and filmmaker Chris Saunders), was a viral hit in South Africa, a Vimeo Staff Pick, and a finalist for Best Short Documentary of the Year at New Filmmakers Los Angeles.
